If you are a customer of Peoples Gas, you are now eligible to receive rebates for purchasing select energy efficient products. The program is open to residential, multi-unit building owner, and small commercial customers of the two utilities who fall within service classes 1 (residential) and 2 (general service), and will be available within the current program dates or until funds are depleted.

Eligible equipment includes certain types of energy-efficient furnaces, boilers, water heaters, and insulation. Read on for more information about eligible equipment, requirements, such as professional installation, and the application process. CUB, along with the Illinois Attorney General’s Office and the Environmental Law & Policy Center, petitioned the Illinois Commerce Commission to force Peoples Gas and North Shore Gas to offer this program as part of an effort to improve energy-efficiency and save Chicago-area consumers money.

Requirements
To qualify, gas furnaces, boilers, and water heaters must be installed by professional contractors. You may opt to self-install insulation or hire a professional contractor. The Midwest Energy Efficiency Alliance (MEEA) provides a list of contractors who specialize in energy efficiency.

Your completed application allows the Program reasonable access to your home to perform an on-site inspection, if needed.

To Apply
The offer is valid within the current program dates, or until funds are depleted, whichever comes first. If you do not receive your rebate as an instant discount through a participating contractor, you can apply online or by mail by printing out an application form. Applications must be postmarked no later than 60 days after the purchase. Rebate checks will take six to eight weeks to arrive.

If you are a landlord of a property located in Peoples or North Shore Gas territory, but the gas account number is in your tenant’s name, you must supply the installation address, gas account holder’s name, gas account holder’s account number, and current tax bill or mortgage statement providing proof of ownership with your application. You will be limited to one quantity per measure per gas account.

Rebates and Tax Credits
You may also be eligible for federal tax credits at 30 percent of the cost, up to $1,500, for purchasing and installing energy efficient products in existing homes in 2009 and 2010. For more details, visit www.energystar.gov/taxcredits, or pick up CUB’s fact sheet on the credits. Rebates for residential energy efficiency products are not considered taxable by the IRS.
