Friday, April 4, 2008—A free CUB online tool that helps people cut their
phone bills has shown more than 12,000 visitors how to save more than two
million dollars a year.
Chicago Chef Ann Ross is one of those lucky visitors. She’s now saving more than $200 a year. After hearing CUB’s Local Phone Cost-cutter advertised on the radio, she tried it out at CUB’s website, www.CitizensUtilityBoard.org. “I am SO happy to report that thanks to your campaign for public awareness, my monthly phone bill has been nearly cut in half!” Ross wrote to CUB. “Thank you SO MUCH, CUB! You made my day!” Ross followed the step-by-step directions, plugging in information from her AT&T bill to receive a customized phone-bill analysis. “It was just so easy, and I thought, ‘I cannot believe I waited this long,’” she said. “I’m telling everyone.” The calculator shows which local calling plan is best for you. In almost all cases, Consumer’s Choice plans are the best buy. Under a legal settlement, AT&T is forced to sell the plans, which were designed by CUB to save most callers money. The prices for Consumer’s Choice Basic, Extra, and Plus are frozen through 2010. Meanwhile, AT&T keeps raising its other rates. The standard rate just went up from 3.5 cents to 4 cents per call, and its monthly line charge—what customers pay just to have phone service—also has increased. Ross says she’s always griped about her bill but never did anything about it, until now. “Hearing that commercial was a Godsend. It was like, ‘Oh you’re kidding.
