Program updates
• If you purchase any eligible equipment from a participating contractor, you can receive your rebate immediately as an instant discount. Contractors interested in learning more should read the Contractor Instant Discount Guidelines.
• Clothes washers purchased after October 31st, 2009 are not eligible for rebates, and the rebate amount for gas storage heaters has changed.
• Landlords are now eligible to receive rebates for qualifying products.
Eligible equipment includes certain types of energy-efficient furnaces, boilers, water heaters and insulation. Rebate amounts range from $70 to $750. Read on for more information about eligible equipment, requirements, such as professional installation, and the application process.
CUB, along with the Illinois Attorney General’s Office and the Environmental Law & Policy Center, petitioned the Illinois Commerce Commission to force Peoples Gas and North Shore Gas to offer this program as part of an effort to improve energy-efficiency and save Chicago-area consumers money. Chicagoland Natural Gas Savings Program
Requirements
To qualify, gas furnaces, boilers, and water heaters must be installed by
professional contractors. You may opt to self-install insulation or hire a professional contractor.
The Midwest Energy Efficiency Alliance (MEEA) provides a list of
contractors who specialize in energy efficiency through the Participating Energy Efficiency
Contractor Network.
Your completed application allows the Program reasonable access to your home to perform an on-site inspection, if needed.

Apply
The offer is valid within the current program dates or until funds are depleted, whichever comes first. Visit the Chicagoland Natural Gas Program page for application forms. Rebate checks will take six to eight weeks to arrive.
If you are a landlord of a property located in Peoples or North Shore Gas territory, but the gas account number is in your tenant’s name, you must supply the following information with your application:
• Installation address
• Gas account holder's name
• Gas account holder's account number
• Current tax bill or mortgage statement providing proof of ownership

Rebates and Tax Credits
You may also be eligible for federal tax credits at 30 percent of the cost, up to $1,500, for purchasing and installing energy efficient products in existing homes in 2009 and 2010.
Please note that rebates for residential energy efficiency products are not considered taxable by the IRS.

Owners of multi-family rental buildings in Cook County with at least five units are eligible to receive assistance to make energy-efficient upgrades through the Cook County Energy Savers program.
