Sept. 14, 2009Crain’s Chicago Business reports that Chicago-area households could save hundreds of dollars in heating costs this winter compared with last.

A struggling economy combined with a healthy supply of natural gas means Peoples Gas customers could cut their heating costs by more than $300 from November to March compared with last year. Nicor Gas, a suburban gas company, predicts the average household could save nearly $200 from October to March, Crain’s reports.

While welcoming the good news, CUB is scratching its head over the disparity in natural gas prices. While Peoples/North Shore Gas is charging around 50 cents a therm in September, Nicor is charging 33 cents a therm.

“I think it demands further investigation to really get to the bottom of it so that we can see what’s going on,” said CUB Executive Director David Kolata.
