Hip, Hip, ‘Hooray!’
Long-time CUB member rewarded with money-saving light bulbs ![]() CUB was greeted with a “Hooray!” after notifying the Northbrook man, who says he never wins anything, that he won the consumer group’s June drawing for 50 money-saving Compact Fluorescent Light bulbs (CFLs). Burke, who has been a CUB member since the consumer group first opened its doors, was automatically entered in the monthly drawing after signing up for CUB’s latest tool, CUB Energy Saver. The online service helps consumers create personalized plans to save money and energy, and rewards ComEd customers for documented reductions in their energy bills with points redeemable for thousands of free or discounted items at local and national retailers. Now, with 50 CFLs that use just a quarter of the energy of traditional incandescent bulbs, Burke’s added a new weapon to his savings plan. “Those will last me two lifetimes!”said Burke, who plans on installing the bulbs in the last few CFL-free sockets in his home. He said he also plans on giving some away to neighbors and friends. Besides winning light bulbs, Burke has benefitted from his CUB membership by heeding the consumer group’s advice on long-distance service. He estimates he saves $5 to $10 each month by going with Pioneer Telephone for calls beyond 15 miles. Money-saving light bulbs and a great long-distance deal may have made Burke cheer, but he’s also been rooting for CUB in rate-hike battles for the last 25 years as a member of the consumer group. Now that’s a reason to celebrate. |
