Are energy-efficient light bulbs a bright idea?

July 18, 2011—Last week, CUB polled Illinois consumers for their thoughts on Compact Fluorescent Light (CFL) bulbs and new energy-efficiency standards set to take effect beginning in 2012. Nearly 900 responded. Thanks for en-LIGHT-ening us!

As it turns out, roughly two-thirds of respondents said they used CFLs in their homes, primarily to reduce energy costs, but more than 68 percent said they did not support a law requiring light bulbs to meet certain efficiency standards.

"Anything that saves energy is positive," said one consumer, Bernadette. "However, I don't think we should be forced to use them."

Others said the law would get the ball rolling on developing even more energy efficient bulbs in the future.

"Progress! Pure and simple," said Robert.

Just last week, Congress failed to overturn the new light bulbs standards, but passed a measure that would block funding for enforcement of the rules. The issue now gets thrown to House and Senate lawmakers negotiating a final energy spending bill. CUB will keep consumers updated on the law's progress.
