World's worst phone bill? Not anymore!
![]() CUB Outreach Director Sarah Moskowitz showed Dennis Pransky how to cut his monthly phone bill by $100 a month. “We won’t be paying a phone bill for the next 18 months,” said the self-employed landscaper. That’s because CUB Outreach Director Sarah Moskowitz, who analyzed Pransky’s bill, spotted multiple overcharges, including a $19.99 third-party "cramming" charge for services the Plainfield man never received. But that wasn’t all. Pransky was also paying for a high-speed Internet connection—even though he already had Internet service through another company. Moskowitz helped Pransky remove both the Internet and the cramming charge from his bill, and negotiate a credit for the months he paid them. On top of that, Pransky was paying for a bloated local and long-distance calling plan, and could save big bucks by downsizing to a more fitting AT&T Consumer’s Choice local calling plan, with Pioneer Telephone for long distance. The Consumer’s Choice plans were originally designed by CUB under a legal settlement with the phone company, and prices have been frozen through at least June of 2013 as a result of the recently-passed Illinois Telecommunications Act. Pioneer Telephone offers local toll and long-distance rates of just 2 to 3 cents per minute, and offers a $10 “CUB credit” for new customers. Making those changes netted Pransky big-time savings. “We’re easily saving $100 a month,” he said. “It worked out really well.” The next pest Pransky hopes to tackle? His cell-phone bill.
