December 20, 2011—Which tree do Illinois consumers prefer, real or artificial? Out of nearly 300 responses to CUB's survey, 56 percent said they choose to erect an artificial tree in their home, roughly twice the number of consumers who choose a real tree each year. Others chose no tree at all, or another alternative.
Less hassle, safety and cost were the primary reasons cited by artificial tree supporters.
"We have set up our beautiful nine and a half foot artificial tree for 11 years now, and it will probably be with us for at least 11 more," said Karen, of Lincoln.
But there were some very enthusiastic real tree advocates as well, who often cited family tradition, and the natural sight and scent of a fresh tree, as irreplaceable.
Elaine, of Chicago, noted: "The days of toilet brush-looking artificial trees are long gone."
"We get real because we do it as a family event," said Janet, of Sandwich. "Additional trees are planted to replace the tree cut down, and our community uses the (disposed) trees as fish cover in our local lake."
Others argued that the most "green" choice of all is a real tree planted in a pot, which can be replanted in the spring.
But Patricia, of Creve Coeur, summed it up best of all: Whichever tree you choose, or don't choose, this holiday season, "there is no right or wrong way to deck your halls." Happy holidays!
