Historic $100 Credits Handed Out
CHICAG0, May 31, 2006—Peoples Gas customers this spring were awarded $100 credits—Illinois’ largest gas refund ever—after CUB exposed a scheme between the utility’s parent company and Enron Corp.

Peoples Gas customers this spring were awarded $100 credits—Illinois’ largest gas refund ever—after CUB exposed a scheme between the utility’s parent company and Enron Corp.

State regulators signed off on a legal settlement involving Peoples Energy and consumer advocates. The settlement ends all litigation connected to the scandal.

CUB uncovered a secret, Peoples-Enron profit-sharing deal that raised prices for consumers in the winter of 2000-2001, when gas prices already were at record levels. Customers of North Shore Gas, also owned by Peoples Energy, got a refund of about $23. The overcharges stemming from the Enron deal were not as great for those customers.
