Volo won the bulbs by taking part in CUB’s "Get Green" Community Giveaway, where residents pledge to use at least one energy-saving CFL in their home. The village was one of 10 Illinois communities with the highest percentage of pledges in 2008, earning a share of 10,000 CFLs, courtesy of CUB. CFLs use up to 75 percent less energy than ordinary incandescent light bulbs, and each bulb can save up to $50 over its lifetime.

While supplies last, Volo residents can pick up free bulbs* between 8:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, at:

The Volo Village Hall
500 S. Fish Lake Rd.
Volo, IL. 60073

*Limit two bulbs per family. Call the Village Hall to make sure it hasn’t run out of bulbs, 847-740-6982.

"CFLs are great for both your pocketbook and the planet," said Rebecca Devens, CUB’s environmental programs coordinator. "We’re proud to reward Volo residents for their commitment to energy efficiency. They’re working for a brighter future for the state of Illinois."

In 2008, 18,000 people took the pledge by filling out a form at CUB’s "Get Green" page, which also has tips on how to dispose of CFLs. The pledge campaign continues in 2009. People who pledge qualify for drawings to win 50 CFLs and a month of free electricity—and they could help win their community up to 10,000 bulbs.

CUB is Illinois’ leading nonprofit utility watchdog organization. Created by the Illinois legislature in 1983, CUB opened its doors a year later to represent the interests of residential and small-business utility customers. Now celebrating its 25th anniversary, CUB has saved consumers more than $10 billion by helping to block rate hikes and secure refunds over the years.
