Hollowayville won the bulbs by taking part in CUB’s “Get Green” Community Giveaway, where residents pledge to use at least one energy-saving CFL in their home. The town was one of the 10 Illinois communities with the highest percentage of pledges in 2008, earning a share of 10,000 CFLs, courtesy of CUB.

CFLs use up to 75 percent less energy than ordinary incandescent light bulbs, and each bulb can save up to $50 over its lifetime, which could be as long as nine years.

“CFLs are great for both your pocketbook and the planet,” said Rebecca Devens, CUB’s environmental programs coordinator. “We’re proud to reward Hollowayville residents for their commitment to energy efficiency. They’ve done their part to ensure a brighter future for the state of Illinois.”

CUB’s “Get Green” Community Giveaway continues in 2009. Take the pledge and help your community’s chance of winning up to 10,000 money-saving bulbs at the end of the year and enter monthly drawings to win 50 CFLs or a month of free electricity for your home. CUB’s “Get Green” page also has information on how to use and dispose of CFLs.

CUB is Illinois’ leading nonprofit utility watchdog organization. Created by the Illinois legislature in 1983, CUB opened its doors a year later to represent the interests of residential and small-business utility customers. Now celebrating its 25th anniversary, CUB has saved consumers more than $10 billion by helping to block rate hikes and secure refunds over the years.
