CUB To Hand Out Money-saving
CHICAGO, June 15, 2009—The Citizens Utility Board (CUB) will be at Calumet City’s River Oaks Center Mall to hand out 3,000 free energy-efficient Compact Fluorescent Light bulbs (CFLs) that can help slash electric bills.
Bulbs At Calumet City Mall CFLs use 75 percent less energy and can save consumers up to $50 each over their lifetime. “In the middle of an economic downturn and with ComEd expected to push for yet another rate hike, we’re all looking for ways to cut costs, and this is a perfect event to do just that,” said Rebecca Devens, CUB’s environmental outreach coordinator. “CFLs are great for your pocketbook and the planet.”

The event should be welcomed news for Calumet City consumers. In addition to the nation’s economic woes, ComEd, northern Illinois’ power company, was just granted a $270 million rate hike last year, and it is expected to ask for another increase this year.

Those who can’t make it to the mall can participate in CUB’s “Get Green” Community Giveaway. People who pledge will qualify for drawings to win 50 CFLs or a month of free electricity—and they could help win their community up to 10,000 bulbs.
