CHICAGO, Sept. 21, 2009—Fighting nearly $1 billion in utility rate-hike cases, the Citizens Utility Board (CUB) will visit the Gurnee Mills Mall to pass out thousands of money-saving Compact Fluorescent Light bulbs (CFLs) to help consumers keep a lid on their electric bills.

“CFLs are great for both your pocketbook and the planet,” said Rebecca Devens, CUB’s environmental programs coordinator. “Each CFL can save you up to $50 on your electric bill over the bulb’s lifetime.”

CFLs use just a quarter of the energy of regular incandescent bulbs and can last up to 10 times longer. The event is:

Noon to 3 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 26
Gurnee Mills Mall (near entrance “B”)
6170 Grand Ave. (just west of I-94)
Gurnee

The bulbs will be distributed one per adult until 3 p.m., or while supplies last.

CUB has argued throughout the year that practicing energy efficiency, through such measures as using CFLs, is one way to fight utility rate hikes. The consumer group currently is fighting nearly $1 billion in electric, natural gas, and water rate-hike cases before the Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC).

CUB is Illinois’ leading nonprofit utility watchdog organization. Created by the Illinois Legislature, CUB opened its doors in 1984 to represent the interests of residential and small-business utility customers. Now celebrating its 25th anniversary, CUB has saved consumers more than $10 billion by helping to block rate hikes and secure consumer refunds.
