ComEd's Energy Efficiency Programs

Home Energy Assessment

If you are a ComEd residential customer, you may be eligible for a free Home Energy Assessment. During the assessment, an Energy Advisor will do a walk-through of your home, finding ways to make it more energy efficient. The advisor also will install the following free energy-saving products:

  • ENERGY STAR® certified LEDs
  • Programmable thermostat
  • WaterSense® certified showerheads
  • WaterSense® certified faucet aerators
  • Hot water pipe insulation (up to 6 feet)
  • Advanced power strips for televisions and desktop computers
  • Smart thermostats are available for purchase at a discount (must be purchased during the assessment for free installation)

You also receive…

Energy Report: At the end of the assessment, the Energy Advisor provides you with a Home Energy Report, which lists the products installed and the estimated yearly savings in electricity, gas, water and money.

Weatherization Discounts: If you are interested in further energy savings, at the end of your assessment, you can request a list of licensed and insured contractors who provide discounted weatherization services through the ComEd Energy Efficiency Program.
Weatherization services are FREE for Income Eligible customers. (See the “Income Eligible” section on the next page.)

Who can sign up? Single-family homes, two-flats, condos and townhomes are eligible. Renters in these building types are also eligible, with permission from their landlord. Call 1-855-433-2700 today to schedule an appointment. Note: If you are a Peoples Gas or North Shore Gas customer (those companies deliver the gas to your home) the building must be two units or less. If you are a Nicor Gas customer, the building must be four units or less. Larger buildings are eligible for the multi-family program.

Why is it free? ComEd and your natural gas utility are required to provide efficiency programs in compliance with state law, and are allowed to charge ratepayers.

All ComEd customers pay these charges under the “Taxes & Fees” portion of their bills, labeled “Energy Efficiency Programs.” (A similar charge is on your gas bill.) Since all customers pay into the program, CUB recommends that all customers take advantage of them.

Multi-Family Energy Efficiency

If you live in or own a multi-family building in ComEd territory, you may be eligible for FREE energy-saving products. The property owner or manager can call 1-855-433-2700 to schedule an appointment for a FREE energy assessment.

Once the assessment is completed, trained technicians will install FREE energy-saving products in all of the tenant units and common areas. These products may include:

  • ENERGY STAR® certified LEDs
  • Programmable thermostats
  • WaterSense® certified showerheads
  • WaterSense® certified faucet aerators
  • Hot water pipe insulation
  • Advanced power strips for televisions and desktop computers

Additional energy efficiency recommendations and incentives within common-area spaces are available. These services are FREE for Income Eligible buildings (see the “Income Eligible” section).

Income Eligible Program

If you are a homeowner with household income at or below 80 percent Area Median Income (AMI), you may qualify to receive FREE weatherization improvements and free installation of energy-saving products. AMI varies, depending on where you live within the ComEd service territory.

ComEd has partnered with community action agencies to help customers take advantage of these energy-saving services. Contact your local community agency to determine if you qualify.

To find the phone number of the community action agency for your area, you can visit or call the Illinois Home Weatherization Assistance Program (IHWAP) at 1-877-411-9276.

Multi-Family Income Eligible Program

If you live in or own a multi-family building designated as income eligible, you may qualify for comprehensive energy efficiency retrofits in common areas and tenant spaces. Improvements may include FREE weatherization, energy-saving products, boiler tune-ups, and more.

Property owners and managers can contact Elevate Energy at 1-855-993-0940 to get details on eligibility and next steps.

Energy Efficiency Loans

Energy Efficiency Loans provide financing for eligible homeowners, owners of residential buildings of 50 units or less and owners of small-business buildings. Your loan payment is conveniently added to your monthly ComEd bill.

ComEd is in the process of selecting a new provider for the program. Details are pending on requirements, interest rates, and participating contractors. Interested customers can call 1-855-433-2700 to sign up to be contacted when the program becomes available.

Fridge & Freezer Recycling

ComEd will pick up your old refrigerator or freezer, recycle it in an environmentally responsible way, and send you $50. Refrigerators over 15 years old can use twice as much energy as newer models and could be costing you as much as $150 a year in electricity.

Plus, you can recycle a working dehumidifier or room air conditioner at the same time and get an additional $10 each. (Dehumidifiers and room air conditioners will only be picked up when accompanied by an eligible refrigerator or freezer.)

To schedule a pick-up, visit or call 1-855-433-2700.

To qualify, your fridge or freezer must be:

  • Between 10 and 30 cubic feet (interior) in size
  • Empty, defrosted, and working at the time of pick-up
  • Removable without risk of injury or modification of your home, with a clear removal path
  • Owned by you and located at the address with the qualifying ComEd account

Discounts on Energy Efficient Lighting

You can receive instant in-store discounts on select ENERGY STAR® certified LEDs and LED fixtures. Look for the ComEd “Lower Price” sticker to save on a variety of energy-efficient light bulbs at participating retail stores. No coupon is required—prices shown reflect the instant discount.

For specific retailer locations, visit:, or call 1-844-288-0011. Limit of 24 bulbs and 6 fixtures per customer.

Note: There are no bulb limits—and the bulbs are free—if you sign up for a free Home Energy Assessment or Multi-Family Energy Assessment.

The Facts On LEDs

  • Use about 75% less energy than incandescent bulbs.
  • Last up to 35-50 times longer than incandescent lighting and 2-5 times longer than fluorescent lighting.
  • Save on cooling costs, as they produce little heat.

Smart Thermostats

ComEd customers qualify for a $100 rebate towards the purchase of a smart thermostat.

A smart thermostat lets you monitor and control your home’s temperature from a smartphone or any web-enabled device so you can save energy and money whether you’re at home or on the go.

All ENERGY STAR® certified models qualify. Visit for a complete list. The full terms and conditions are available at, or call 1-855-433-2700 for more information.

ComEd offers rebates for qualifying, energy-efficient appliances and home products, high-efficiency central air conditioners and heat pumps, weatherization improvements and more.

Review eligibility requirements and complete rebate applications (online and printable) at:, or call 1-855-433-2700.
