CHICAGO, January 25, 2017— CUB is pleased that consumer advocates were able to help reduce Illinois American’s proposed rate hike by $14.2 million. However, we believe the company still got more than it needs or deserves. Consumers’ water bills are already too high, and that’s why we plan to file a petition for rehearing to challenge the company’s $35 million rate hike, and reduce it further.
Background:
*On Feb. 24, 2016, Illinois American Water Company filed a request to increase rates by about $49.5 million with the Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC).
*In December 2016, the ICC approved an increase of about $35.3 million, $14.2 million less than the company requested.
*Illinois American Water provides service to 314,000 customers from Southern Illinois to the Chicago suburbs.
