Take action: Efficiency on the chopping block

CUB travels across Illinois, and we find that almost everyone supports energy efficiency—because it’s THE BEST WAY to lower utility bills.

That’s why we’re asking you to send a message to Congress and the White House to protect efficiency.

We were concerned a month ago when the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy said: “Federal efficiency policy may indeed be in troubled water…”

And we’re even more concerned now that we hear efficiency initiatives are on the chopping block as part of $2 billion in proposed cuts (and 3,000 job losses) at the Environmental Protection Agency. The Energy Star program, which helps consumer identify money-saving appliances, has reportedly been zeroed out. Also, the Energy Department’s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy could get axed.

Efficiency makes sense—the cheapest energy is the energy you don’t use. Eliminating energy waste is the ultimate of fiscal responsibility. So we should do everything we can to protect programs that save us money.

Drastic changes like this require congressional approval, so it’s important that we stand up for efficiency TODAY.
