Last month, CUB published its first-ever “Guide to Fighting Robocalls“, and over 1,500 people signed our petitions urging the Big Telecom companies to take action against the influx of these annoying calls. Some robocalls are necessary, like school closings, pharmacy reminders, etc. But many are flat-out scams.
According to YouMail, Illinois residents have already received over 181 million robocalls in 2019 so far–that’s about 11 per person. The state is number seven in top robocall hits for January 2019.
Here’s a list of the top six cities that were hit the most last month:
1. Atlanta, GA
2. Dallas, TX
3. New York, NY
4. Los Angeles, CA
5. Houston, TX
6. Chicago, IL
YouMail also suggests Chicago area code (773) is number 13 for area codes hit with the most calls, followed by suburban Chicago (708) at 69, and downtown Chicago (312) at number 99. Many of the calls ranged from debt collectors to unknown, generic scammers.
