Amid a pipeline-replacement program that could lead to a Chicago heating-affordability crisis, Peoples Gas customers have a little relief: Its March rate dropped to its lowest in three years, at 26.53 cents per therm.
That’s the lowest price Peoples Gas customers have seen since June of 2016, when the price was 24.75 cents per therm. That year the price dipped as low as 23.93 cents per therm, in May. (To see a list of Peoples Gas’ charges as far back as 2015, click here.)
So what are other Illinois residents paying this month? Here are the major utilities’ March gas rates:
- Nicor Gas: 36 cents per therm
- North Shore Gas: 33.96 cents per therm
- Ameren: 36.873 cents per therm
Reacting to the low Peoples Gas price, one CUB staffer said: Chicagoans on bad alternative gas supplier deals “are really, really going to lose money” now. She told the story of one customer who was charged an outrageous $1.45 a therm with a bad supplier deal.
