October ‘jam-packed’ with money-saving CUB events

It’s officially winter heating season and the best time to prepare your home for cold weather is now.

Below you will find a jam-packed schedule of free CUB events this month that can help you improve energy efficiency at home and protect your bottom line. We hope to see you!

6:30 – 7:30 p.m., Monday, Oct. 3: Understanding Cable and Reducing Robocalls with CUB

Join CUB and the Worth Public Library (6917 W 111th St, Worth, IL 60482) for an in-person presentation on your cable options and reducing robocalls. During this event, a CUB representative will discuss ways to cut your cable costs and the different choices in the TV market. Register here. 

11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 4: Utility Bill Clinic with Niles Senior Center

CUB and the Niles Senior Center (999 Civic Center Dr, Niles, IL 60714) are hosting a free in-person event to advise residents on reducing electric, gas and both landline and cellphone bills. Each participant will speak one-on-one with a CUB counselor to review their bills. Please register with the Niles Senior Center at 1-847-588-8420.

7:00 – 8:30 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 4: Navigating Utility Bills with CUB 

Join CUB and state Rep. Janet Yang Rohr for a virtual presentation on rising energy prices, how to decode your gas, electric, and telecom bills and tips on saving money and energy. Register here. 

11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 6: Rockford Utility Bill Clinic with State Sen.  Steve Stadelman 

CUB and state Sen. Steve Stadelman  are hosting a free in-person event to advise residents on reducing electric, gas and both landline and cellphone bills. Each participant will speak one-on-one with a CUB counselor to review their bills. This event will take place at the Rockford Public Library–East Branch (6685 E. State Street Rockford, IL 61108). 7:00 – 8:00 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 6: A Consumer’s Guide to Going Solar

Are you interested in going solar? CUB is very excited about new solar incentives available to homeowners in Illinois, but we know that advertising and high-pressure sales pitches can be confusing. This presentation will go over solar basics, including an overview of state/federal incentives, why now is the best time to go solar and how solar panels work with your home and the grid. 9:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 11: Utility Bill Clinic with Frankfort Public Library

CUB and Frankfort Public Library (21119 S Pfeiffer Rd, Frankfort, IL 60423) are hosting a free in-person event to advise residents on reducing electric, gas and both landline and cellphone bills. Each participant will speak one-on-one with a CUB counselor to review their bills. Registration is available by 30-minute increments on the library’s online calendar of events.

6:30 – 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 12: CEJA–Benefitting You, and Our Community 

The Climate and Equitable Jobs Act (CEJA) was passed in September 2021 and is one of the nation’s most equitable and comprehensive clean energy  bills. At this event, we’ll discuss how you can take advantage of consumer benefits like clean energy and energy efficiency. Also, we’ll share how Rockford residents can apply for clean energy benefits for schools and get updates on the jobs training hub planned for Rockford.

This event is being co-hosted by state Sen. Steve Stadelman, state Reps. Dave Vella and Maurice West and the Sierra Club’s Illinois chapter. This is an in-person event taking place at the Nordlof Center (118 N Main St, Rockford, IL 61101, USA), but it will also be livestreamed on Facebook (link will be emailed to participants). 7:00 – 8:00 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 13: Sustainability Speaker Series: Energy Efficiency and Solar 

Join CUB at the Evanston Ecology Center (2024 N McCormick Blvd, Evanston, IL 60201) for an in-person presentation on energy efficiency. Get  tips to reduce your energy use and learn about solar power programs available to you.

10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 15: Utility Bill Clinic with Maywood Public Library

CUB and the Maywood Public Library (121 S 5th Ave, Maywood, IL 60153) are hosting a free in-person event to advise residents on reducing electric, gas and both landline and cellphone bills. Each participant will speak one-on-one with a CUB counselor to review their bills. There is no registration required for this event.

6:00 – 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 18: Avoiding Utility Scams & Home Energy Savings  

Are you concerned about the rise in utility prices? Join CUB at the Dekalb Public Library (309 Oak St, DeKalb, IL 60115) for an in-person presentation on how to reduce your energy usage. This event is designed to help you better understand the ins and outs of your bill, how to avoid utility scams, and give you a primer on  programs designed to save you money and energy. Bring all your utility-related questions. No registration required.

6:30 – 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 19: Going Electric: On the Road and in Your Home 

Join CUB at the Palos Heights Public Library (12501 S 71st Ave, Palos Heights, IL 60463) for an in-person presentation on the benefits of electric vehicles and more efficient and affordable electric alternatives. This event will be co-hosted by the Cook County Department of Environment and Sustainability. There will be a Q&A following the presentation. Register here. 

10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 20: Chicago Mobile City Hall

Join CUB at Chicago City Clerk Anna Valencia’s Mobile City Hall, where community resources and City departments are brought directly to residents who are unable to commute downtown. CUB will have a table providing information on energy efficiency and your options in the gas and electric markets. This event will take place at McGuane Park (2901 S Poplar Ave, Chicago, IL 60608).

9:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m., Monday, Oct. 24: Environmental Justice Forum

Join CUB at Parent University (2001 S Throop St #2, Chicago, IL 60608) for a discussion on energy savings, solar, pollution and Pilsen as an environmental justice community. This event is co-sponsored by the Pilsen Neighbors Community Council, Elevate, Pilsen Environmental Rights and Reform Organization (PERRO) and Net Z.

6:30 – 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 25: Understanding Cable and Reducing Robocalls with CUB

Join CUB and the Glenwood-Lynwood Public Library (19901 Stoney Island Ave, Lynwood, IL 60411) for an in-person presentation on your cable options and reducing robocalls. During this event, a CUB representative will discuss ways to cut your cable costs and the different choices in the TV market.

7:00 – 9:00 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 26: Utility Bill Clinic with State Rep. Janet Yang Rohr

CUB and state Rep. Yang Rohr are hosting a free in-person event to advise residents on reducing electric, gas and both landline and cellphone bills. Each participant will speak one-on-one with a CUB counselor to review their bills. This event will take place at the Nichols Library (200 W Jefferson Ave, Naperville, IL 60540). Register here.
