NEW JOB OPPORTUNITY: DIGITAL COMMUNICATIONS COORDINATOR 

The Citizens Utility Board (CUB), a membership-based organization and one of Illinois’ premier consumer groups, has an opening for a full-time Digital Communications Coordinator. This is an exciting opportunity to be part of developing e-newsletter campaigns to fight utility rate hikes, educate consumers about clean energy, protect consumers from energy rip-offs and advocate for consumer-friendly ways to fight climate change.

What you’ll be doing at CUB:

  • Managing the technical aspects of CUB’s e-newsletters using Salsa Engage to build gripping, visually-pleasing emails that target appropriate audiences and build membership loyalty.
  • Developing, implementing and maintaining digital media strategies that align with CUB’s brand, support CUB’s goals and include special promotions to grow CUB’s e-newsletter audience, encourage participation and move people up the ladder of engagement.
  • Showing a flair for graphic design and applying solid writing skills to help the CUB team create powerful, informative content (posts, videos, photos, etc.) for e-newsletters, social media platforms, the website, blog and staff presentations.
  • Identifying new ideas and opportunities by monitoring best practices, and measuring the effectiveness of digital media campaigns using all reporting/analytical tools available.
  • Monitoring and gathering social media and email metrics for grant purposes.
  • Providing general assistance to CUB’s Communications Department, as needed.

What we need from you at CUB:

  • Commitment and passion for public interest work.
  • Experience in marketing automation software and cloud-based, constituent-relationship management tools, including Salsa Engage and Salesforce.
  • Basic knowledge of content-management systems, preferably WordPress.
  • Proficiency with Adobe Creative Cloud (InDesign, Photoshop, and Adobe Illustrator).
  • Strong writing and proofreading skills and intense attention to detail.
  • Strong analytical skills (experience with Google Analytics a plus) to learn what makes content and online campaigns successful, and then build upon it.
  • Strategic and creative thinker with a solid grasp of digital outreach, and with the energy and enthusiasm required to identify emerging trends, brainstorm fresh ideas and tap into new technologies.
  • Proficiency with MS Office (Excel and PowerPoint).
  • Bachelor’s degree in Public Relations, Marketing, Communications, English, related field or equivalent experience.

The Citizens Utility Board (CUB), one of Illinois’ premier consumer advocacy groups, is seeking a Spanish-speaking outreach & communications coordinator to help with our grassroots outreach and communications work.  This is an exciting opportunity to get hands-on experience working for a good cause:  fighting electric/gas rate hikes, preventing rip-offs, and advocating for a clean energy future.

What you’ll do at CUB:

  • Identify and establish relationships with promising organizations, elected officials, municipalities, and businesses to promote CUB’s services, especially to Spanish-speaking populations.
  • Represent the organization at events across Illinois, interacting with a wide range of people while learning about natural gas, electric, and telecom policies and how they intersect with issues of sustainability, affordability, and equity.
  • Work with CUB’s communications department to translate public-facing materials into Spanish and upload them onto CUB’s Spanish-language website.
  • Manage CUB Spanish-language social media accounts (Facebook and Twitter).
  • Record quarterly grant metrics for Spanish-language social media.
  • Provide Spanish-language content for a monthly e-newsletter and monthly blog article.
  • Staff informational tables and conduct one-on-one utility bill consultations with individuals.
  • Assist with pre- and post-event logistics and reporting.
  • Work with other CUB staff to create a strategic outreach plan and identify what methods work best at the grassroots level.
  • Develop and implement strategies for moving Spanish-speaking consumer contacts up the ladder of engagement.

What we need from you:

  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills in both English and Spanish.
  • Proven commitment to public interest work.
  • Energy, enthusiasm, the ability to connect with a wide range of people.
  • Great attention to detail and ability to self-start and work with minimal supervision.
  • Comfort with or willingness to learn content management systems, preferably WordPress, and design programs, such as Adobe InDesign and Photoshop.
  • Valid driver’s license and willingness to work some nights and weekends.

  • Screen requests for CUB to appear at community events and handle necessary paperwork.
  • Assist with event publicity by:
    • Taking the lead on developing social media posts and mass emails to advertise events.
    • Designing, printing, and sending mail pieces advertising events.
  • Act as a liaison between the outreach and communications departments, identifying opportunities for greater collaboration and information-sharing.
  • Manage pre- and post-event logistics, including registrations, materials, and data-entry.
  • Assist with sign-in, sign-out, and crowd control at events when needed.
  • Work with other outreach staff to improve CUB’s internal & external event management processes.
  • Represent the organization at events across Illinois, interacting with a wide range of people while learning about natural gas, electric, and telecom policies and how they intersect with issues of sustainability, affordability, and equity.
