Attention Ameren customers: Prepare yourself for higher electric bills with help from these programs

Starting on June 1, customers across Central and Southern Illinois will see a dramatic increase in the price of electricity and up to $580 in higher electric bills over the next year. Below are Ameren programs that can help lessen the burden of your utility bills this summer.

If you or someone you know is having trouble paying for utility services, the first step is to contact the utility. They will know what assistance is available and can give you information about special payment plans available to help you pay off your bills over a longer period of time. You can contact Ameren at 1-800-755-5000, or online.

Ameren’s energy efficiency programs:

  1. Multi-Family Energy Efficiency Program
Buildings with 3 or more residential units powered by Ameren are eligible for free energy-saving products, which may include LED lightbulbs, smart thermostats and more. This program is available to multi-family properties, regardless of the income of the owner or occupants.
  2. Income Qualified Home Savers Assessment Program (Single Family)
Ameren customers who meet income requirements based on household size qualify for a free home energy audit, which may include free energy-saving measures such as the ones listed above.
  3. Rebates and Incentives
Ameren provides rebates on some energy efficient equipment and appliances, such as smart thermostats (sign up to receive a $100 coupon), heat pumps and air conditioners. You can receive instant in-store discounts on select Energy Star-certified LEDs and LED fixtures. Save on a variety of energy-efficient light bulbs at participating retail stores. No coupon is required—prices shown reflect the instant discount. Find energy efficient lighting near you here

Ameren also offers several forms of financial assistance, including one-time payment extensions and fixed monthly payment agreements to settle past balances. (For example, Warm Neighbors Cool Friends provides year-round energy bill payment assistance and home weatherization to make harsh winters and hot summers bearable. Eligible households can receive $350 during the heating season and $200 during the cooling season.)

Finally, don’t forget to apply for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). Administered by the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity, LIHEAP is designed to help eligible low-income households pay for energy service. Call the LIHEAP hotline at 1-877-411-9276 or visit www.LIHEAPIllinois.com. The deadline for this program is Tuesday, May 31.
