In reporting our latest good news—the Illinois Appellate Court upheld a $36.7 million refund for ComEd customers—Crain’s Chicago Business wrote: “The wheels of utility-rate justice turn slowly.”
True, being a good consumer advocate means never giving up. The ruling made public this week comes after a six-year legal fight waged by CUB and the Illinois Attorney General’s Office.
It’s ComEd’s move now. We’re hoping the power giant chooses not to appeal to the Illinois Supreme Court. With no further delays, consumers could begin to see a refund late this year or early in 2014.
The refund could average roughly $10 per customer. Obviously, that’s not a huge amount, but we’re always happy to see consumers get back money that didn’t belong to ComEd in the first place. Plus, the bigger victory in this legal fight is that consumer advocates helped set a precedent in how electric rates are determined.
