Electric Avenue, the 1982 hit by reggae artist Eddy Grant, has been voted the best energy song of all time by Illinois consumers.

CUB’s month-long contest asked music-lovers and energy nerds alike to submit their favorite energy-themed song on Facebook for a chance to win a month of free electricity, up to $100.

With 56 votes, Electric Avenue led the way, easily beating out the second and third place entries, The Power of Love, by Huey Lewis (22 votes), and Electric Feel, by MGMT (21 votes).

Marilyn Hearns, a second grade teacher from Richton Park, won CUB’s top prize.

“I’m in a state of shock,” she said (no pun intended). “I never win anything! You have just made my day.”

Although Marilyn’s name was randomly chosen as the winner of the free electricity, she didn’t vote for the winning video. Her pick for best energy song: Turn Off The Lights, by Teddy Pendergrass. Not only does she love the song, but she believes in the message.

“It’s something I always say to my kids. And as a teacher, it’s something I tell my students too,” she said.

Congratulations to Marilyn (and Eddy), and thanks to everyone who participated in the contest!
