Here’s a good example of how current Illinois law breeds misleading electric and gas marketing:
One logo is for Illinois’ biggest regulated gas utility. The other is for an alternative supplier that has sparked hundreds of complaints/questions over the years—many from confused people who were stuck with high bills.
A lot of folks have no idea Nicor Advanced Energy—an unregulated supplier—is different from the utility, Nicor Gas. Dolores found out the hard way: Her bill increased five-fold.
“I am concerned about the Nicor Advanced Energy gas prices,” she wrote in a complaint to CUB. “I did not know it was different from Nicor Gas, and unregulated. I am a senior with limited income.”
Suppliers are free to enter into agreements to use a utility company’s logo for their own profit. However, two cases before the Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC) could help change that by prohibiting such misleading marketing.
