The Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC) has announced that the state’s major utilities that have agreed to extend their moratorium on shut-offs through March 31, 2021.
Remember, while the moratorium on shut-offs has been extended for many customers, the moratorium on late fees has ended. It’s important that you contact your utility if you’re having a hard time affording your bills and see what protections are available and how to start erasing your debt.
Here’s more detail on the moratorium on shut-offs.
1) These companies are extending it for ALL residential customers:
Nicor Gas
Liberty Utilities
2) These companies are extending it for residential customers who qualify for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) and for customers financially impacted by COVID-19:
Ameren Illinois
Aqua Illinois
Illinois American Water
Commonwealth Edison
Peoples Gas
North Shore Gas
Utility Services of Illinois.
Very important: Customers ONLY have to SAY they’re experiencing hardship because of COVID and they can avoid disconnections.
3) MidAmerican has agreed to extend its moratorium on disconnections for residential customers who qualify for LIHEAP.
The Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC) earlier this year approved landmark new consumer protections for large utility customers in response to the pandemic: Read CUB’s fact sheet on the protections. The ICC OK’d a separate plan for customers of small utilities, such as MidAmerican. Read CUB’s fact sheet on those protections.
