CUB was honored to be invited to a CAPS (Chicago Alternative Policing Strategy) Energy Efficiency Event at Chicago’s 7th District Police Station Thursday. Several CUB staffers were on hand to help residents uncover savings in their phone, gas, and electric bills.
Aimee Gendusa-English, CUB’s community service liaison, had the opportunity to look over the bills of Sharon, an Englewood resident who learned of the event from a leadership training group she is involved with.
After Sharon pulled out her ComEd bill to be examined, Aimee playfully covered up the bill with her hands.
“Pop quiz: How many kWh do you use in a month?” she asked.
Sharon’s first response was to loudly laugh. “I don’t know!” she exclaimed, smiling.
Aimee reassured Sharon that it was very common for people not to know their usage, but it could be important in determining whether or not she should stay on the City of Chicago’s power deal with Integrys.
With Aimee’s help, Sharon used the Chicago Power Deal Calculator and learned that she would save $68.87 over the year by switching from Integrys Energy Services back to ComEd.
Aimee also gave out stellar advice for reducing kilowatt-hours. Particularly useful to Sharon was the tip that she should set her water heater to 120 degrees to avoid wasting energy.
