, our free online service that helps people cut their utility bills, has a new look designed to make our pocketbo0ks happy. Ale Lopez is already there. The Hanover Park woman credits the free tool with helping her save $528 a year.
“Without a doubt, I think that CUB Energy Saver is my ally that helps me save energy,” Lopez said. “My pockets are very thankful for all the tips and news it shares.”
CUB Energy Saver is full of no- or low-cost actions people can take to cut their utility bills. These are simple steps, such as turning off the coffeemaker in the morning, cleaning the dust off the coils on the back of your refrigerator, and using a smart power strip to reduce energy waste with your electric devices.
This year, C3, the California company that developed the technology behind CUB Energy Saver, gave the tool a revamp. The updates include:
Better rewards. ComEd customers are eligible for rewards based on how much energy they save. For every kilowatt-hour (kWh) of waste you cut, you earn two points. Those points can be redeemed for a gift card to a local or national retailer, such as Amazon, Target, Barnes & Noble or Chili’s. Points expire after 12 months from the date of award, so don’t wait too long to use them.
Sharper calculations. The smart people at C3 are constantly improving the free tool. By linking up with your ComEd account, CUB Energy Saver generates actual saving numbers. Your savings and points are based on comparing your current bill to your past energy usage. The online tool’s energy-saving calculations even account for the weather.
Easier to Use. Just browse the “ways to save” tab for a list of simple no-cost energy-saving actions, like cleaning your dryer’s lint filters, scraping food before dishwashing and unplugging your computer equipment.
How does Lopez save?
“My favorite tip is cleaning the back of the refrigerator once a month and placing it where the air can circulate,” Lopez said. “I also use smart power strips in each bedroom.”
