CUB to the rescue: ID theft leads to no service for ComEd customer

Why was an $813 balance added to Surrina H.’s ComEd bill?

The charges were tied to a Chicago address where she had never lived. While trying to resolve the identity theft issue, ComEd disconnected her service and she was left without service for days.

“ComEd was not really responding,” she said.

Desperately seeking a resolution, a church friend suggested Surrina reach out to CUB. Surrina spoke with Consumer Advocacy Assistant Jantay Gray. “Jantay was very helpful,” Surrina said. “She must have acted right away.”

Jantay filed an inquiry with ComEd. Unable to associate her name with the address of the charges, ComEd cancelled a total of $959.62 from Surrina’s balance.

Though Surrina still had a legitimate balance remaining on her active account, her lights were back on just one day after calling CUB. “I’m going to donate as soon as I can because I love the work you all do,” she said.
