CUB statement on MidAmerican gas and electric rate hikes

The following is a statement from the Citizens Utility Board (CUB) regarding MidAmerican’s announcement that it has filed for gas and electric rate hikes before the Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC):

The Citizens Utility Board (CUB) is deeply concerned that a combined average gas and electric increase of more than $24 a month and $293 a year will be a hardship for far too many customers.  CUB plans to intervene in this case to weed out wasteful spending and challenge every penny the company can’t justify.  -CUB Director of Communications Jim Chilsen

Background:

  • In March, MidAmerican Energy announced that it had filed a request for an increase in gas and electric rates before the Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC). Under Illinois regulatory law, that filing will spark an 11-month rate case.
  • The company said that residential customers in Illinois would see a combined average monthly increase of $24.42 a month. That includes an electric increase that would be phased in over two years: a $9.11 average monthly increase in 2027 and a $9.10 monthly increase in 2028, under MidAmerican’s proposal. The proposed gas rate hike would hit customers with an average $6.21 a month increase beginning in 2027.
  • MidAmerican Energy, headquartered in Des Moines, Iowa, serves 838,000 electric customers in Iowa, Illinois and South Dakota, and 811,000 gas customers in Iowa, Illinois, Nebraska and South Dakota. In Illinois, that includes more than 73,100 electric customers and more than 60,300 gas customers.
